A Rocking Chair is Two Chairs
by Philip Monks
we are the still point and the prime mover
I played about with images around the core idea, but it was only when the form of the couplet emerged, echoing the duality, perhaps the dialectic, of the content, that the poem really took shape for me. I worked on loose, unstressed rhymes at the end of the second lines to give a sense of rocking (‘other / consider / or’), changing this to a harder rhyme for the stopped section (‘fulcrum / cocoon / room’). The video has a very different feel and more organic rhythm than the formal structure of the words on the page, which I like.
