My response to this project was to look back at the work of certain 20th century English painters who I admire; from the early part of the century the work of Camden Town painters, especially Harold Gilman and Walter Sickert, and later in the century Patrick Caulfield. In particular I wanted to engage with their painting of interiors, with their ability to raise the everyday to something extraordinary and mysterious.

My own painting ‘Interior’ responds to theirs, and may be the beginning of a new series for me.
